Getting here

How to reach Aspen

Compare Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, Denver, Eagle County, rental cars, RFTA buses, winter roads, and seasonal Independence Pass access.

Airport choices

ASE is closest; EGE and DEN may offer more connections

Closest airport

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport

ASE sits just outside town, so the transfer can be brief. Mountain weather and airline operations can still delay arrival; check the flight and ground transportation before departure.

Regional airport

Eagle County Regional

EGE is closer to Aspen than Denver but has fewer flights. Compare the available schedule, shuttle or rental car, and winter road conditions for the actual travel dates.

Broadest flight map

Denver International

DEN offers the largest flight network but leaves a long mountain drive. Interstate traffic, winter weather, and crashes can add hours, especially on busy weekends.

The road rule

Check Independence Pass road status before driving east of Aspen

The narrow section of Colorado 82 closes for winter and can face weather restrictions when open. Check COtrip on the day of travel. When the pass is closed, reach Aspen through the Roaring Fork Valley instead.

Arrival decisions

Road status, transit, and dinner near the hotel

Seasonal road

Check Independence Pass before taking Colorado 82 east

Colorado 82 east of Aspen closes seasonally and can face restrictions or severe weather when open. Check COtrip before driving toward the pass, and follow the open route through the Roaring Fork Valley when it is closed.

Without a car

RFTA connects the valley

Regional buses can connect Aspen with Snowmass and other Roaring Fork Valley stops. Routes and schedules change, and some trail or scenic-area trips use separate managed transportation.

Weather delays

Leave the first evening free of fixed bookings

Mountain weather can delay flights and the drive into Aspen. Choose a restaurant near the hotel that accepts walk-ins or same-day bookings, and save prepaid reservations for Saturday.

Downtown

A central room reduces daily driving

Once in Aspen, the gondola, galleries, restaurants, and many evening stops fit within the compact center. Transit can handle several mountain and valley connections.
