Things to do in Aspen include four ski mountains, Maroon Bells, downtown arts, Rio Grande Trail, wildflower hikes, and seasonal Independence Pass.
Outside
The four ski hills, Maroon Creek, Independence Pass, and trails near town occupy different corridors. Choose by terrain and season, then check current lift, road, trail, and reservation information before leaving.
Four mountains
Aspen Mountain rises from the downtown gondola plaza and favors confident skiers. Buttermilk has the clearest beginner role, Highlands draws stronger skiers toward steeper terrain, and Snowmass supplies the broadest range for mixed groups and longer ski days.
Maroon Creek
Maroon Lake supplies the familiar Bells reflection; the Crater Lake route continues beyond the developed viewpoint onto rougher trail. Check the current vehicle, shuttle, bicycle, and reservation rules before choosing how to arrive.
High road
Colorado 82 climbs to the Continental Divide east of Aspen on a narrow seasonal road. Allow half a day for the summit and safe pullouts, and check COtrip before leaving town.
From town
The Rio Grande Trail leaves the downtown park corridor beside the Roaring Fork on a gentler grade than Aspen's mountain trails. Walk an out-and-back from town or use it as the start of a longer bicycle ride down valley.
Uphill close to town
Smuggler Mountain provides a sustained climb above town, while Hunter Creek follows water and wooded slopes into a longer trail network. Compare grade, distance, trail surface, and lingering snow before setting out.
Summer on the ski hills
When summer lifts operate, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass turn the ski network into separate high-elevation outings with views, walking, and scheduled mountain activities. The operating mountain matters because the two base areas are not within walking distance of each other.
Inside town
The Aspen Art Museum, Wheeler Opera House, downtown galleries, and Victorian commercial blocks sit within the compact center. The Wheeler/Stallard Museum is west of the core in the West End, while the John Denver Sanctuary connects downtown to the river and Rio Grande Trail.
Town and trail
Contemporary art
The museum's contemporary exhibitions occupy Shigeru Ban's woven-screen building at Spring Street and Hyman Avenue. Its rooftop and galleries add an indoor downtown stop without requiring a car; the current exhibition calendar determines what is actually on view.
Historic stage
The 1889 opera house stands at Hyman and Mill with a restored auditorium above the downtown streets. It hosts performances, films, talks, and community events; check the calendar for the travel dates and reserve tickets when required.
Mining-town history
Aspen Historical Society uses the 1888 Wheeler/Stallard house in the West End to explain the town's mining years and later transformation into a ski resort. The indoor exhibits add context to the Victorian buildings downtown and offer a good stop when the weather turns.
Garden and river
The sanctuary's engraved stones, perennial gardens, and water features sit beside Rio Grande Park and the river corridor. Stop on the walk between downtown and the Rio Grande Trail, or pair it with a short outing beside the Roaring Fork.
Downtown blocks
Brick walkways along Hyman and Cooper link galleries, restaurant patios, historic commercial buildings, and the blocks around Wagner Park. The area is small enough to explore before dinner, but individual galleries keep their own exhibition and opening schedules.
